If you want to make a difference in the world, you don’t have to wait until you have a certain amount of money in your bank account. Charitable contributions do not have to be financial.
There is often a misconception that develops around what it actually takes to support a charity. You can have a significant impact on your community without having to dip into your savings and take from the money you need to support your own family.
Put down your credit card and see the list of ways you can influence your community without spending any money:
1. Become a volunteer.
While nonprofits need financial support in order to pursue their mission, they need volunteers just as badly. Find a cause that you are passionate about and sign up to be a volunteer. The nice thing about volunteering is that it’s very flexible. If you have a busy schedule, you can volunteer once every now and then. If you have more free time, you can choose to volunteer on a weekly or monthly basis.
2. Donate what you don’t use.
As you begin to rid your home of clutter, keep the things you are looking to throw away and see if there is an organization that will take them as a donation. Whether it’s lightly used clothing, furniture, or even cars, there is a charity that will make good use of your items.
3. Organize a fundraiser.
You might not have extra funds to donate to charity but chances are you know a lot of people who do. Consider starting a fundraiser in the name of a charity that is close to your heart. You may be surprised at how many donations you receive from individuals that found out about your fundraiser through word-of-mouth or on social media.
4. Register as an organ donor.
Every day, around 21 deaths occur due to a lack of organ donors. In the event of your death, your organs can be given to patients who need them for survival.
